A poem

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, my friend S gave me a poem that her mother had written when she was pregnant with S. Her mother, who died almost 20 years ago, used to read the poem to S when she was a little girl, and it means a lot that S wanted to share it with me. I received S's permission to share it here, and I hope that you will find it as special as I do.

If You’ll Be Mine
Written by Norma S.

In you'll be mine?
I have commitments to do...
And lovely discoveries
to share with you.

Let me weave you a dream
Of the trips we can take...
For, in becoming your mother,
There are promises to make.

Life will show you tomorrows
Of warm summer sun
That will speak in your silence
'Til your silence is done.

Speaking out moments
Of great things to say
'Til one day you speak
As you learn your way.

Afternoon shadows
Will walk with you.
We'll sprinkle your toes
With fresh morning dew.

You'll open the taste
Of autumn's first breeze.
You'll talk to the birds
Just as much as you please.

Each spring...
The trees will grow and new leafy lace
To sweeten the smile
On your soft pink face.

You'll chase after butterflies
Through fields think with heather
AND... contemplate changing...
The changing weather.

I'll hear you grow
With each word you speak....
And mellow your tears
Whenever you weep.

I'll give you my hand
When you are afraid,
And thank God forever
For this blessing he's made.

Your first snow
Shall be the wonder of white,
And the clouds shall sometimes
Blanket the light.

You'll tug at the fragrance
From the end of a flower.
So, live all the fullness
In each passing hour.

Though you don't understand
Everything right now,
You'll discover great beauty
As life shows you how.

It seems that I've known you
So long and so well...
For the life of a child
Is God's faith retell.

So, lace all your birthdays
With Joy and Spring,
And listen to all the wisdom
That living brings.

When you discover
All the stars up above,
You'll find a billion forevers
And my heart filled with your love.

Wow, this is really beautiful. What a keepsake for your friend to have from her mom and what a sweet gesture for her to share it with you!
